The digestive system Flashcards
What does the alimentary or digestive canal consist of?
The alimentary canal consists of organs that food pass through such as: the mouth, esophagus, intestines and stomach.
What organs aid in digestion, but food actually never pass through them?
The organs are: The liver which is the largest and most important, the pancreas and the gallbladder.
What chemical is produced in the mouth, and what is its effect?
Salivary amylase which is released from the salivary glands, begins the breakdown of starches so the body can quickly benefit from the sugars it produces.
What chemicals are produced in the stomach?
Gastric juices such as: HCI acid, Pepsin and Rennin are produced in the stomach.
Where is Gastric Juice released from?
Gastric juice is released from the stomach walls.
What is the purpose of HCI acid?
HCI acid destroys the bacteria that is on the food and also neutralizes the action of the saliva on the carbohydrates.
What is the purpose of Pepsin?
This enzyme acts on the protein molecules to create peptides and polypeptides which are the main amino acids.
What is the purpose of Rennin?
This is an enzyme present to breakdown milk protein.
What is indigestion?
Indigestion is also referred to as heartburn or an upset stomach. This term describes the discomfort or fullness in your upper abdomen as soon as you start eating.
What is acid reflux?
Acid reflux is a common condition that occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the food pipe.
What is a stomach ucler?
A stomach uclers, also known as gastric uclers, are painful sores in the stomach lining. Stomach unclers occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects your stomach is reduced. This allows the digestive acids to eat away the tissue that line the stomach, forming an ucler.
