The Development Of Attachment Flashcards
What is primary attachment figure
The person who ha adorned the closest bond with the child- demonstrated by the intensity of the relationship. In most cases is the mother
What is separation anxiety
The distress shown by an infant when separated from his or her caregiver.
Not always the mother
What is stranger anxiety
When the infant is approached or picked up by someone unfamiliar
What was the aim of Schaffer and emersons study
To see if attachment formation was the same for all infants to describe the stages of development
Outline the procedure of the study by Schaffer and Emerson
- 60 new born Glasgow babies (working class)
- was a longitudinal study using observation and interviews in family home
- studied until the age of one
- mothers visited every 4 weeks
- attachment was assessed by separation anxiety and stranger anxiety
What were the findings of Schaffer and Emerson’s study
- indiscriminate attachment= infant produces similar responses to all objects. Towards the end they prefer social stimuli . Interactional synchrony is important for infant establishing with others
- beginning of attachment= infant become more sociable but prefer human company , also become discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar but not yet stranger anxiety
- discriminate attachment= infant forms attachment with Primary care giver and displays both stranger and separation anxiety. 65% attached to mothers
- multiple attachment= after one month of primary caregiver then form another attachment e.g with siblings which is 29% and after 6 months 78%
Briefly state evaluation points for Schaffer and Emersons study
- unreliable data
- biased sample
- are multiple attachments equivalent?
- stage theories
- longitudinal study
What is multiple attachment
Having more than one attachment figure
