The Dermis Flashcards
Histamine
Causes swelling
Technical term for swelling
Edema
Also know as the dermal matrix…made up of proteins and GAGS
Ground substance
Glycosaminoglycans
Gel like substance that is made up of water and proteins, it maintains water balance and gives support to the dermis
Can hold 100x it’s own weight in water
Hyaluronic acid
Elastin
Makes up 15% of the dermis and gives the skin it’s elasticity
Cicatrix (scar)
When elastin is damaged and replaced with collagen
Makes up 5% of the dermis and creates a support system or framework for the other structures found within the dermis
Reticulan
Subcutaneous
Also known as the hypodermis and subcutis
Makes up 70% of the dermis and gives support (tone) to the skin
Collagen
Sebacesous glands
Produces sebum which lubricates the surface of the skin and slows down TEWL
Excretes waste and toxins through perspiration
Sudoriferous glands
Hair follicle
Protects against the elements, helps with regulation of body temp, aids in the transportation of sebum onto skin
Responsible for the inflammatory response
Produces two chemicals: histamine and heparin
Mast cell
Location where small arteries and veins come together for A gaseous exchange
Looped capillaries
