What did segregation mean?
Segregation was the main political policy upheld by many states - particularly Southern states. This meant that black and white Americans were separated in society.
Who are the NAACP? What have they done?
The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) and they won major legal cases in education and in desegregation. However, they lost many cases in trying to punish white Americans who were involved in lynching (when a mob would catch a black person and publicly hang them).
How were Native Americans viewed by the British Empire?
They were seen as savages
What did the 1830 Indian Removal Act do?
The 1830 Indian Removal Act kicked native tribes off their rich farmland and moved them onto land which was dry and poor.
What did the 1851 Indian Appropriations Act do?
The 1851 Indian Appropriations Act put into place the Indian Reservations. These were now designated bits of land that the native Americans could not leave. This was a way of segregating the native Americans.
What did the Dawes Severalty Act in 1887 do?
The Dawes Severalty Act in 1887 then gave the President the right to divide up the reservation land and give it to individuals rather than whole tribes. This once again forced thousands of Native Americans out of their homes. This law was an attempt to assimilate the Native Americans.
Which states were predominantly where Hispanic Americans originated?
California and Texas
