- Cordeliers club and other extreme societies organised a meeting at the champ de Mars where people should sign a petition calling for the establishment of a republic
- 6,000 made their way to this meeting, sparking fears of disorder

- Assembly sent lafayette and the national guard to ensure order (martial law)
- Stones were thrown at the national guards
- Guards fired directly on the crowd and 50 people killed

- To the radicals this was a betrayal by the moderates
- Completed the split that had opened between the radicals and moderates
- The jacobin club split with the more moderates forming the feuillant club
- Convinced they had to prevent the revolution from becoming extreme
- Many patriots clubs and newspapers were closed and the leaders went underground
- Increased tension made worse by fears of an austrian invasion
