The formation of the national assembly

A
  • Several weeks of delay frustration and anti climax followed the grand opening
  • Third estate refused to meet separately to verify the credentials these elected, claiming that all representatives should meet as one body
  • Only agreed to verification processes once voting by head had been agreed
  • Abbe Sieyes argued that the 3rd estate was the nation and had every right to act alone
  • 17th June 3rd estate voted 490 to 90 to call itself the national assembly
  • Asserted its right to represent the nation and intestine to make decisions about the future of France
  • 19th June some clergy joined them

The tennis court oath

A
  • Kings attention had been on his son who had died in the 4th of June 1789
  • Necker persuaded him that he needed to present a clear reform programme to the deputies and arranged to do this on the 23rd June
  • On the 20th June the national assembly found that they assembly room had been locked and was guard
  • Fearing that Louis may try and dissolve the assembly Bailly (elected president) took them to the royal tennis court to hold their meeting
  • Swore the tennis court oath where they promised to never disband until France had a new constitution
  • This was a direct challenge to the position of the king

The royal session and its aftermath

A
  • 23rd June
  • Louis accepted a new taxation and a fairer land tax based on the value of land
  • Refused to refer to them as the national assembly and demanded the estates should meet separately
  • Following meeting took place at the palace royal where orators such as Desmoulin stirred up fury against Louis
  • 26th June the king brought 4800 extra troops to Paris
    27th June permits voting by head and orders thee rest of the nobility to join the national assembly
  • By 4th July there were 30,000 troops in Paris most of which were foreign mercenaries
  • Increased rumours of a plot to arrest the deputies and destroy the assembly

  • 11th July Necker is dismissed
  • Confirmed poplar fears that the king was seeking ways to prevent reformed and go back on his promises
  • Bad harvest meant that bread prices on the 14th July had been the highest since 1715

The storming of the bastille 12- 13 july

  • Mobs raided gun shops to protect themselves against a royal assault
  • Parisian electors met at the hotel de ville to set up a commune to control the city
  • Established a national guard to volunteers who would police the city and protect the Parisians from any actions by the kings

The storming of the bastille 14th july

A

Crowd of 8,000 went to les invalide and found 32,000 muskets and artillery
Needed gunpowder so made their way to the bastille
De Launay (governor) refused to surrender the fortress so some people forced their way in
De Launay was captured and his head was put on a stick
70 attackers were also killed

Wearing the revolutionary coakcage he announced the reinstatement of necker and his acceptance of the national assembly, paris commune and national guard
