What is ethnocentrism ?
This is when somebody relates to the world only in terms of their own culture. ( therefore thinking that every other culture is wrong)
What is polycentrism ?
This means openness and understanding of other cultures
What is a subculture ?
This is a group of people who share a unique way of life within a larger dominant culture
What does the culture as an iceberg mean ?
- high culture - culture that is visible
- folk culture - culture that we are aware of
- deep culture - culture that people aren’t aware of
What are the components of culture ?
- aesthetics
- physical and material environments
- values and attitudes
- social structure
- personal communication
- religion
- education
What are the two dimensions of social structure ?
- individuals vs groups (reference groups, family run businesses)
- social stratification and social mobility (caste vs class system)
What is social structure ?
This is the pattern of social arrangements and organised relationships that characterise a society
What are values ?
Ideas, beliefs and customs that people are emotionally attached to
What are attitudes ?
They reflect peoples underlying values
What are manners ?
These are appropriate ways of behaving, speaking and dressing
What are customs ?
Habits or other ways of behaving in specific circumstances that are passed from generations in a culture
What is folk custom?
This is behaviour often dating back several generations in a group of people
What is popular custom?
This is behaviour shared by a heterogeneous group
What are gift giving customs ?
For example, in China etc. it is normal whereas in most western societies it is regarded as bribery
What does low context culture mean in terms of language ?
This means clear and direct communication e.g. no means no
What does high context mean in terms of language ?
This means that communication relies heavily on relationships e.g. it relies on context to get the point across
What is a lingua franca ?
This is a third or link language understood by two parties of different languages
What is the Kluckhohn -Strodtbeck framework ?
This means the relation to nature, time orientation, trust and control, material / spiritual, responsibility to others and view of personal space
What is the Hofstede framework ?
This was the first framework for culture and it initially had four dimensions and then cadded more on
It included individualism vs collectivism, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity vs femininty, lon g term orientation, indulgence vs restraint
What causes migration and social change ?
push factors - escape from poverty etc.
pull factors - prospect of work and economic betterment
What is urbanisation ?
This is the movement of people from rural areas to urban areas
What is cross-cultural risk ?
This is a situation where a cultural misunderstanding puts some human value at stake
How to achieve cross-cultural literacy ?
- tolerance for ambiguity
- perceptiveness
- valuing personal relationships
- flexibility and adaptability
