When was the First Period of Crusades
1095-1204
When was the First Crusade and why?
In 1095 AD Pope Urban declared this crusade to weaken the Turks.
When was the 2nd Crusade and why? How long did it last and what was the outcome?
In 1147 AD, Bernard of Clairvaux preached up a crusade to reclaim a key crusader city.
This crusade went on for 40 years and ended in failure.
When was the 3rd crusade and why?
1189-1192. Backed by Emperor, King of France and King of England to recover territory. Did not recover Jerusalem.
When was the 4th Crusade and why?
1202-1204. The Infamous Crusade. Were to sail to Egypt to free Alexandria but instead sailed to Constantinople and there they raped and pillaged the Christian city and weakened the Eastern Church

1204-1291

The Children’s Crusade
What was the result of the Children’s Crusade of 1212?
Didn’t accomplish much. Many of the crusaders who arrived on the Italian coast were enslaved by other reported “Christians.”

The overthrow the Muslim overlords of the Balkans, which failed.
