What is the Renaissance?
A late medieval movement consisting of the rebirth of classic and patristic periods. It was supported by patronage and focused on humanism and ancient sources.
What is Humanism?
An emphasized study of the humanities consisting of Greek and Latin Literature, rhetoric, history, and philosophy.
What relationship did Renaissance humanism with Christianity?
It was not anti-religion and called for moral reforms similar to the later Protestants.
Who was Erasmus of Rotterdam?
A Renaissance humanist who wrote the satirical work “In Praise of Folly.”
How did Erasmus of Rotterdam criticize the Church?
He criticized Church practices focusing primarily on morals rather than doctrinal reform.
What was Gallicanism?
Frances prioritization of national interest over papal authority. It is political centralization and a reaction to papalism.
What was Conciliarism?
A movement which argued that councils held power over the Pope.

If they became mercenaries the pastors and officials would receive a huge pension.
How did the hiring of Swiss mercenaries harm the Papacy?
Because the loyalty of these men could be bought thus weakening ecclesiastical authority and moral integrity.
