Who fought in the Crimean war?
Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire (Turkish) vs. Russia
What was the causes for the Crimean war?
Britain and France were worried about Russias expansion and growing influence near and in the black sea and supported the Ottoman Empire, who took a firm stand against Russian expansion too. All three countries feared that Russia would cut off Europes trade link with Asia, so they declared war.
Name the technology used and developed during or as a consequence of the Crimean war.
- Steam Ships (faster deployment and transport)
- Railways (faster transport of troops and weaponry)
- Telegraphs (faster communications led to rapid warfare)
- Photography (soldiers more accountable for their actions)
- shifts from muskets to rifles (advanced weaponry)
What was still very much the same in the crimean war, which should have been changed
- Armies still relied on Cavalry to defeat enemy
- Artillery was still used ineffectively and was inaccurate
- Cavalry still used short ranged pistols and swords
What was the Enfield rifle, and why was it so revolutionary?
- Effective range of 500m (rather than The Brown Bess’s 50m)
- Reasonable accuracy over 500m (unlike anything else)
- could fire 3-4 shits a minute, double the speed of a brown bess in most cases
