The Cosmological Argument Flashcards
A Posteriori
Things can be proved based on evidence.
The God of Classical Theism
God is eternal and separate from the universe. Our only God is out of our time and space
What are Aquinas’ three ways to support the Cosmological Argument
- Motion or change
- Cause
- Contingency
What is actuality?
What is Potentiality?
A state of being, the reality of something at this moment in time.
The capability and possibility of someone or something will develop or change.
Principle of Suffcient Reason
An adequate reason that explains the cause of an event , in this case the organ of the universe
Philosophical Logic
The study of more specifically philosophical aspects of logic. Bertrand Russell introduced this logic.
Fallacy of Composition
Since parts have a certain property, the whole thing has that property.
Creationism
The belief that the universe and living organisms originate from specific acts of divine creation, as I’m the biblical account rather by natural processes such as evolution.
Natural Theology
Knowledge of God which is obtained by reason alone without the aid of revolution.
Fideism
An idea that religious beliefs cannot be justified by rational means, only through faith.
Ex Nihilo
Out of nothing.
{From Latin}
Actual Infinite
Potential Infinite
- It is not growing towards infinity because it is already infinite.
- A part within an actually infinite set is equal to the whole set because it is infinite
- Whether you add to or subtract from an actual infinite it will always remain the same number- infinity.
- Exists if it is always possible to add one more to a series of things or events. It is possible to think of the future as a potential infinite because more events are always being added on in history.
Cosmos
The world or universe as a perfect and well ordered system.
