Deaths that must be reported to the coroner? (SUPINES)
S - Suspected suicide
U - Unnatural or violent death
P - Pregnancy or deaths during child birth
I - Institutional deaths
N - No doctor certificate issued or cause unknown
E - Enactment requires the holding of an inquest
S - Surgical or medical or dental operation or procedure
What are institutional deaths?
I.e. deaths in police custody, or a prison, or mental health facility
What is the purpose of the coroner?
To help prevent avoidable deaths
Role of police?
Police must contact the National Initial Inquiry Office (NIIO) immediately
Duty to report deaths?
People who find or learn of a death must report to Police.
Deaths where inquiries must be held
•Appears to be suspected suicide
•Any death that occurs in official custody or care
•Cause of death not clearly established
