Republic:
A country governed by elected representatives. These representatives are chosen by people (democracy)
Federal system of government:
a power sharing arrangement between state governments and a central one that oversees the country.
Legislative Branch:
The part of the government that makes the laws. Also known as Congress.
Executive Branch:
The part of the government that ¨executes¨ laws. Also known as the presidency.
Judicial Branch:
The part of the government consisting of the Supreme Court and lower federal courts, that interprets the law.
Bill:
A proposed law. A bill can be introduced either in the House of Representatives or the Senate.
Amendment:
A proposed change to a bill or law.
Veto:
The power to reject a proposed law (only the president can do veto bills).
Checks and Balances:
The system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches by having some power over them.
Democracy:
A system of government in which officials are elected by the people.
