- most able candidates were R.A Butler and Lord Hailsham, but Douglas- Home was chosen despite being unpopular

- Began to be seen as out of touch.
- No women or young people in the government.

- The Porfumo affair 1963, Minister of war John Porfumo was involved in a sex scandal with a younger women.
- The night of the long knives where Macmillan purged most of his cabinet trying to introduce younger figures in 1962.
- The Vassall affair, Kim Philby was caught spying for the Soviet Union during the cold war and fled to SU in 1963.
