A

The idea is that place is made up of all things that come together to make a place what it is.

Name 5 things that make a place what it is?

A

Its location.
The physical characteristics of the landscape (topography)
The human characteristics (who lives there and what they’re like plus the human features of the landscape.
All the things that flow in and out of that place e.g people money, ideas, resources.
The sense of place i.e. the emotional meanings the place has, either individuals or groups of people.

A

Rivers may migrate or when a volcano erupts and alters the landscapes.

A

A

For example, one person may think of a city center as a place of excitement and opportunity, whilst another person may think of it as a place of stress.

A

Many people create their identity based on the places that they feel connected to. For example, a person my consider coming from Manchester to be a part of who they are.

A

An insider is someone who is familiar with a place and who feels welcome in that place they feel that they belong there.

A

An outsider is someone who feels unwelcome or excluded from a place, they don’t feel that they belong.

A

Places that people have spent time in. When a person visits or lives in a place their experiences, such as the things they see and the people they meet, shape their sense of that place.

A

Places that people have not been to, but have created a sense of place for through their depiction in media (books, art and films).

Why might a media place be different to the lived experienced?

A

The media may present a place in a particular way and for a particular purpose. For example, tourist destinations such as the Caribbean as a place of relaxation and opulence, but the reality for people who live their may be that it is a place of poverty and hardship.

A

Improvements in travel technology mean that far places are quicker to get to, and can therefore be experienced more easily and frequently.
Improvements in ICT mean that people can be familiar with media places -places they have no loved experienced of.
People can also remain closely connected with people and activities in far places via he Internet.

Define the word ‘placelessness’?

A

How globalisation is making distant places look and feel the same.

Why do some people base their identity on a place?

A

This is because individuals share characteristics that they feel bind them together as a group, creating a shared identity for all the people from the place. This can be seen at a variety of scales:
Local- e.g. the individuals from a village sharing a positive sense of that village.
Regional- e.g. the individual from a region sharing an accent.
National - e.g. the individuals of a nation sharing a language, religion or a love for that nation.
