Q

Why are meanings and representation of places important?

A

They are important as they can change how people behave towards those places. Positive feelings about a place may make a person decide to go on holiday or invest in a business there, whilst negative feelings may make them avoid that place. They are also important as many people generate their identity based on the places they feel connected to.

Q

Give an example of where reimaging has taken place in the UK?

A

In the 1980’s and 1990’s some people’s image of Birmingham was that it was a place of high unemployment and abandoned factories. However many places in Birmingham have been reimaged by turning old industrial areas into new developments (Brindley Place). It was an old industrial site but now had shops, offices, restaurants, bars, theatres and residential areas.
