The concept of hazards Flashcards
1
Q
Define a natural hazard:
A
An event which poses a threat to human life and physical property
2
Q
What are the potential impacts of natural hazards?
A
- Geophysical (e.g. tectonic activity, volcanoes, earthquakes)
- Atmospheric: (e.g. tropical storms, droughts)
- Hydrological: (e.g. floods, storm surges, tsunamis)
3
Q
Name and describe the human reposes to natural hazards:
A
- Fatalism; the acceptance that these events happen naturally and there’s little that can be done to prevent them
- Prediction; remote sensing and seismic monitoring help predict when a disaster may occur, warnings can be shared promptly and reach a greater number of people
- Adaptation; adapting behaviours to minimise the number of losses
4
Q
What are the stages included in the hazard management cycle?
A
Preparedness
Response
Recovery
Mitigation
5
Q
What are the stages included in the park model + what does it show?
A
Relief
Rehabilitation
Reconstruction
Illustrates a countries decline from normality after a hazard event and its recovery stage.
