The Complement System Flashcards
The Complement System
It is the activity of blood serum that complete the action of antibodies.
Complement proteins normally circulate as inactive
precursors :
(pro-proteins, proenzymes, zymogens )
Complement proteins are generally
synthesized by the
liver hepatocytes, blood monocytes, tissue
macrophages, and epithelial cells of the genitourinal
tract and gastrointestinal tract
Activation of complement
(removes an inhibitory fragment and exposes the active
site)
The product of complement
activation become covalently
attached to microbial cell surfaces or to antibodies bound to microbes
Complement activation is inhibited by
regulatory proteins that are present on normal host cells and absent from microbes.

Lysis
the major effector of the
humoral branch of the immune system.
Opsonization
which promotes phagocytosis of particulate Ags
Immune clearance
which removes immune complexes from the circulation and deposits them in the spleen and liver
Binding to specific complement receptors on cells of the immune system,
triggering specific cell functions, inflammation, and
secretion of immunoregulatory molecules
