Q

What did Gorbachev think of the German reunification?

A
  • Gorbachev was less enthusiastic despite his idealism
  • He expected that a new united Germany would be friendlier to the West than to the East
  • Gorbachev finally accepted German reunification
  • Even allowed Germany to become a member of NATO but it wasn’t a small thing for him to accept
  • Like all Russians, he lived with the memory that German aggression in WW2 had cost the lives of 20 million Soviet citizens
