Warsaw pact & its significance
-collective defence treaty= similar to NATO
significance:
-both alliances= military action against the other
-Warsaw pact= gave USSR more control
Arms race
1945= USA drops 2 atomic bombs on Japan
1949= USSR tests first bomb
1952= USA develops H bomb
1953= USSR develops H bomb
Significance of arms race
-USA= thought it could use nuclear power to stop soviet attack
-Soviet developed their own nuclear forces
-War= escalates rapidly if to occur
-USA & USSR= need other ways to stop each other
Impact of soviet rule
-Hungary= suffers under USSR control
-communists= unpopular
-any opposition was wiped out
Destalinisation
- stalin died at this point
Khrushchev= secret speech leads to communism taking a relax
USSR= not a dictatorship but a one party state
khrushchev appoints Imre nagy as Hungary PM
Reasons for Hungarian uprising
Nagy wanted to:
-leave Warsaw pact
-Hold free elections leading to no single party gov
-UN protection from the soviet
problem for USSR= encourages others to leave
Hungarian uprising 1956
-disapporved of Nagy’s reforms
200,000 USSR troops= entered Hungary
-5000 Hungarians died aswell as 1000 troops
-Imre= arrested tried & executed
International reaction to Uprising
-USA= condemned actions of USSr
boycotted at olympics
-Hungary = asked for aid
USA= unable to help as it would initiate war
Left all other satellite states helpless under USSR control
