Truman’s concerns after the war
-Many countries lacked money/ jobs
-Made communism look attractive to people.
-Poland, Hungary etc,= already communist Truman feared this would happen else where
Truman doctrine 1947
Speech which he said:
-Countries= communist or capitalist
- USA must contain the spread
-would provide money and troops to help govs combat takeovers
Marshall plan 1947
-$13 billion from USA to rebuild europe.
-communism= appealing to those with nothing
USA= offers money to stop people joining communism
Countries must trade with USA= money
Sixteen western countries took the money
Stalin= sees it as an attack
Cominform/ communist information Bureau
-1947
-communist parties= all controlled by Moscow
- got rid of any opposition to soviet control
-encouraged countries to block the Marshall plan
Comecon/ Council for mutual economic assistance

-Built up trade links
-prevented comecon countries from signing the MP.
-Comecon= Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland etc.
Consequences of C,C,MP,TD
-western europe was now in one place- linked to USA because of MP & communist containment
-Eastern Europe= one camp because of its ties to USSR

-Military alliance= USA,Britain,France, Belgium etc.
-if one country attacked= they all did

-not willing to accept USSR’S aggression
-Warsaw pact= 1955 another military alliance

- not popular= goes against agreement at potsdam conference
- Stalin sees it as USA= making themselves richer
Berlin Blockade
-1.5 Million troops= zone
-Eastern Germany= source of food
June 1948 all roads,rails & canals= closed
Soviet= block berlin supply
Berlin airlift
- would look weak= draw out of Berlin
-used airlift
-26june1948 to 30september1949 = thousands of tonnes were flown in daily
