Stage 1 of CBT
1.) Therapist & clients agree on the nature of the problem and set goals fort therapy.
Stage 2 of CBT
Therapists helps the patient identify their negative thoughts and behaviours - patients record them using the ABC form. This involves the client being set homework tasks to complete outside of the sessions.
Stage 3 of CBT
Therapist will challenge negative thoughts and help the client to change them by discussing the evidence for and against their negative thoughts in the sessions. The client is then set further homework to encourage to test out irrational beliefs which have been challenged in the sessions.
Stage 4 of CBT
Behavioural activation happens when the client is asked to complete pleasurable activities as homework tasks.
Encourages them to return to normal functioning by returning to activities they enjoy.
Stage 5 of CBT
As with all types of therapies, it is essential the therapist provides clients with unconditional positive regard to keep the therapy space safe.
