What is OCD?
A disorder characterised by obsessions and compulsions.
What are some of the symptoms you associate with OCD?
Repetitive intrusive thoughts, anxiety reducing behaviours.
How common is OCD?
2 percent of the population.
What is an obsession?
A persistent thought, idea, impulse or image that is experienced repeatedly. It feels instructed and causes anxiety.
What is a compulsion?
A repetitive and rigid behaviour or mental act that a person feels driven to perform in order to prevent or reduce anxiety
DSM to obsessions
- Recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges and images. Instructive and unwanted. Causes marked anxiety or distress.
- The individual attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, urges, or images, or to neutralise them with some other thought or action
DSM for compulsions
1.) Repetitive behaviours or mental acts. Perform in response to an obsession.
2.) Aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or distress.
DSM for both
The obsessions or compulsions are time-consuming or cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Compulsions - repetitive such as habitual washing
Compulsions - anxiety reduction - only 10 percent of OCD Show compulsions without obsessions for most these compulsions serve the sole purpose to reduce anxiety
Avoidance - Sufferers may attempt to avoid anxiety by avoiding situations.
