The Cognitive Approach Flashcards

1
Q

What are the basic assumptions?

A

1- All behaviour drives from thinking processes
2- Internal mental processes can be scientific ad objective.
3- Cognitive Processes can be affected bu schemas
4- They draw inferences

Q

What are the Role of Schemas?

A

1- Help us recollect information quickly
2-Helps us organise behaviour such as gender
3- Fills in gaps in our knowledge.

Q

What is an inference?

A

Going beyond the evidence to make assumptions- don’t forget to relate to the study.

Q

Why do they use models?

A

Because we can not see processes such as memory.

Q

What comparison did they make?

A

We process information the same as computers.

Q

What study supports Schemas?

A

Bugelski and Alampay 1962- Two groups of apps were shown pictures of either different animals or faces. The pops who saw faces saw a man in the shown picture and the apps show the animals saw a rat. This shows they saw what they expected to see.

Q

Strengths of the Cognitive Approach

A

1- Supportive evidence- Bugelski and Alampay 1962
2-Strong practical application e.g. therapy such as CBT. And it has been successful. There was a meta analysis and it was 2nd most successful

Q

Weaknesses of the Cognitive Approach

A

1- Example of a mechanistic reductionism approach comparing computers to humans
2- Lacks ecological validity
3- Not scientific enough due to inferences
4- Doesn’t explain why we get the thoughts
