the coastal system Flashcards
what is a coast
narrow zone where land and sea meet and interact
what is a dynamic coast
a coast that is always changing
what is a coast that always changes called
a dynamic coast
what is an open system
one where there is inputs ad outputs of both energy and matter
what is a closed system
as system where is there is no input or output of matter but energy can transfer
what is a system where there is no input or output of matter but energy can transfer called
a closed system
what is an isolated system
no input or output (transfer) of both energy and matter
what is an input
energy/matter going into a system
what is an ouput
energy/matter leaving a system
what is a store
energy/matter remaining within a system for a certain amount of time
what is a transfer
energy/matter moving about a system
how is the sun an input of energy into a coast system
-creates wind
-photosynthesis (more plants to trap sediment)
which type of wave is an input to a coastal system and why
constructive because it has low energy and a larger swash so it brings in sediment to the beach
how is wind created
the sun heats up the different parts of the land, the hottest part will heat the air up and create low pressure, this then leads to a convection current
how are waves created
the wind interacts with the sea surface causing frictional drag, this forms little ripples and as these get closer to land there is increased friction with the sea bed, this causes the wave to grow and topple over
