the coast and liittoral zone Flashcards
Littoral zone
Wider coastal zone, shore and shallow part of the sea just offshore
What 4 sub-zones are in the littoral zone
Coast, back shore,foreshore and nearshore
3 ways coasts are classified
Geological (lithology and structure)
Impacts of sea level change (rising or falling)
Dominant coastal processes (erosion or deposition)
What are 2 common coastal classification distinguishes
Rocky or cliffed, coastal plains
Characteristics of a rocky coastline
Clear distinction between land and sea (height of cliffs). Exposure to erosive forces of sea, rain and wind created high energy coastline
Characteristics of coastal plains (state of what equilibrium)
Land slopes gently towards sea and imperceptible transition from one to the other.
Maintained in state of dynamic equilibrium deposition of sediment by river stems entering sea and sediment from offshore sources and marine erosion
Low energy coastlines
Dynamic equilibrium
Balanced state in system where inputs and outputs are balanced over time
