The Classification of Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
1
Q
Element -
A
A substance that can’t be split into anything simpler by chemical means. An element contains only one type of atom.
2
Q
Important note:
A
3
Q
Compounds -
A
When two or more elements chemically bond together. The elements always combine in fixed proportions (e.g. Hydrogen and fluorine always combine to form hydrogen fluoride)
4
Q
Mixture -
A
Two or more substances not chemically combined that can be separated by physical means (e.g. a mixture of elements - nitrogen and oxygen)
5
Q
Important note:
A
A pure substance has a fixed melting and boiling point, but a mixture may melt or boil over a range of temperatures!
