Democracy
A system of government where citizens vote to make decisions
Government
An organization that rules, directs or controls a city, a state or a nation
Direct democracy
A type of government in which ALL of the people vote on ALL of the decisions
Polis
A city state in ancient Greece ex. Athens and Sparta
Totalitarian
A government in which a dictator or a small group of leaders control all aspects of people’s lives
Assembly
A lawmaking body of government made of a group of citizens
Monarchy
A government ruled by a king or queen
Citizen
A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his or her country
Philosophy
The study of or search for the truth, wisdom and the right way to live
Archipelago
A group of islands ex. Greece, Japan
Peninsula
An area of land surrounded on three sides by water
Aristocrats
A member of a rich and powerful family
Tyrant
A ruler in ancient Greece who took power by force with the support of the middle and working class
Oracles
A sacred site (place) where Gods/Goddess were consulted during ancient Greek times
Hellenistic
A term that describes Greek culture after the death of Alexander the Great; the 3 main kingdoms formed by the break up of Alexander’s empire
