What is the battle that was a turning point in the Civil War?
The Battle of Gettysburg (1863), North invaded Pennsylvania. Largest bombardment of the war, won by the union army (the North).
What are the consequences of the Civil War?
- The bloodiest armed conflict in American history.
- Just after the end of the war, Lincoln was assassinated.
- New amendments to the Constitution
What were the new amendments?
13th - Slavery is banned from the United States
14th - All persons born in the US = American citizens & discriminating laws are forbidden
15th - all citizens can vote no matter their race
What was the compromise of 1877?
at the end of the reconstruction: when a northern candidate was chosen as president by the congress, southern democrats were allowed to deal with ex-slaves without interference from the north.
Explain the Jim Crow laws
they are discriminatory laws that were passed after the reconstruction:
- restrictions on the voting right of ex-slaves
- segregation in schools, public transportation, hospitals, housing etc.
These laws were considered constitutional, creating the doctrine of “separate but equal” > allowing Jim Crow laws for a century
When and which are the last states admitted to America?
1959, Hawaii and Alaska
