What is the British Virginia Company and when did it happen?
It is when first slave arrived on plantations. > 1607
What happened after the foundation of the British Virginia Company?
The Pilgrim Fathers came to the land, and other “Company” were founded withing the next century
Who were the settlers sent to America?
Servants, and some convicted criminals for slave labour.
What part of the American continent was occupied by the british during the 18th Century?
The Eastern coast. France controlled the middle part and Spain the south territories. The frontiers between France and England were disputed
When and what was the Treaty of Paris?
In 1763, ended the war between France and UK. All the lands on the right of the mississipi were now Great Britain lands.
Talk about one important Founding Father
George Washington, first president of the United States in 1789. Known as the “father of the country”.
What were the motives for the American Revolution?
- Tyranny of the British King > America wants democracy
- Taxation without representation > they are not allowed to participate in politics
- Unfair trade restriction > not allowed to make anything from raw materials.

1776
What are the founding documents?
- Declaration of Independence
- Articles of Confederation (first “constitution)
- U.S Constitution
- Bill of rights (first 10 amendments to the constitution)
What is Checks and Balances?
The power is divided between three branches : Legislative, Executive, Judiciary ; to make sure a King can’t take control of all the power
The power is also divided between states and federal government
Explain the Anti-Federalism
Movement against the US Constitution. They prefered the Articles of Confederation because it gave individual states more power.
It’s a debate that is still ongoing in America.
What are the principle ideas of the Bill of Rights?
A lot of individual protection, making sure police can’t invade personal space, or force you to answer questions.
Your rights need to be said outloud to you.
Death penalty is not considered cruel but torture is.
Powers that are not given to the US by the constitution belongs to the states or the people.
Define dual citizenship
Americans are citizen both of their state and of the United States.
What were the three waves of the Westward Expension? (<3)
- Expension of federal territories by treaties
- Exploration and settlement of new federal territories
- Creation of New States from federal territories
Define State cession
A state giving up a piece of their land to the government. It becomes federal territories. Congress is making the laws for it.
