What was the Civil Rights Movement?
The Civil Rights Movement was a social and political movement where many Black Americans fought for their rights as they hated how they were treated. They wanted to conquer racism. In short, the Black Americans wanted to gain equal rights.
What did the Civil Rights Movement want to acheive?
They wanted everyone to be equal and treated equally. They wanted to abolish segregation and the Jim Crow laws. As in the Declaration of Independence,, “all men are created equal”.
What kinds of prejudice did black people face?
They faced segregated benches, buses, schools, universities, toilets, water fountains, waiting rooms, etc. They also weren’t allowed to vote.

1954-1968
What is emancipation?
Emancipation means freedom.
What is segregation?
Segregation is separating people because of their race, religion or culture.
What were the Jim Crow laws?
The Jim Crow Laws were the persecution of black people and the limitations of their rights. It is also the segregation of black and white people in daily life.
Who were the Ku Klux Klan (KKK)?
The KKK were an organisation of white Southerners who used parades, beating and lynching to intimidate and kill black people, as well as Jews, Catholics and foreign immigrants. Sadly, there are still some people today who associate themselves with the KKK.
What is lynching?
Lynching is the process of hanging people from trees and waiting until they die. This particular method was used by the KKK in order to get rid of the black people. They also made children watch people being lynched.
