What is an open circulatory system?
A system of blood vessels where blood leaves the vessels and flows around cells e.g. in spiders (insects)
What is a closed circulatory system?
A system of blood vessels where blood flows within the blood vessels e.g. humans
What does the systemic circuit do?
Carries blood to an from all parts of the body except for the lungs
What does the pulmonary circuit do?
Carries blood to an from the lungs
What is a portal system?
A network of capillaries in one organ or tissue joined to another network of capillaries in another organ or tissue through a vein(s)
What is pulse?
The alternate contraction and relaxation of an artery as blood passes through
What is blood pressure?
The force the blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels
Give an effect of smoking on the circulatory system
Increases the heart rate which puts greater strain on the CS and raises the risk of a heart attack or stroke
Give an effect of diet on the CS
Diets rich on saturated fat increase blood pressure and risk of heart attack
Give an effect of exercise on the CS
Increase pressure on the CS and increases the strength of the heart in the long term
