Osmosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is osmosis
A
The movement of water molecules from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration across a semi-permeable membrane
2
Q
What is diffusion?
A
The passive movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
3
Q
Give an everyday application of osmosis. (Explain)
A
Food preservation - if you put salt on food there is a high salt concentration outside. When bacteria come along, water from the bacteria (high conc.) Will leave the cell to go to the food (low water conc.) Killing the bacteria
4
Q
What is turgor?
A
The pressure of the cells contents against the cell wall
5
Q
What is the opposite of turgid?
A
Plasmolysed
