Q

What is plasma

A

This is the liquid part of the blood. It is pale yellow and mostly water. It transports dissolved chemicals around the body, including wasted food and oxygen . It also transports heat around the body. Plasma helps to maintain our body temperature at 37°. When we’re cold, blood vessels become smaller and the blood moves to our core resulting in less heat loss.

Q

What are red blood cells

A

These are made in bone marrow and contain red pigment. Red blood cells carry oxygen. Oxygen attaches to the red blood cells in the lungs and is released in the muscles and brain.

Q

What are white blood cells

A

These are also made in bone marrow and they fight infection by surrounding micro organisms and destroying them and by forming proteins called antibodies. Aids or a condition when they are not produced.

Q

What are platelets

A

These are formed in bone morrow when large cells break down into smaller pieces. They help to form blood clots which prevent excessive loss of blood and micro-organisms entering the body.

Q

What are capillaries

A

Capillaries are tiny blood vessels found between arteries and veins. The walls of these are very thin, allowing materials to pass in and out of them, for example in the intestines, food enters the blood stream through the capillaries.

Q

Why is the wall of the heart thinner on one side and thicker on the other side ?

A

The right ventricle pumps blood from the heart to the lungs. This wall is thin because it is a shorter distance.
The walls of the left ventricle are thicker because it has to pass blood a long distance from the heart throughout the entire body.
