The Breathing System Flashcards
What is the breathing system
Respiration is the release of energy from food. It takes place in the cells.
What is the chemical equation for the breathing system
Glucose + oxygen—-> energy + CO2 + H2O
Name the 11 parts of the breathing system
Nose
Epiglottis
Trachea
Bronchus
Bronchiole
Lung
Alveolus
Diaphragm
intercostal muscles
Rib cage
Pleura
What does the epiglottis do
The epiglottis is a flap of skin that prevents food going into the lungs.
What does the bronchus do
The bronchus is a tube that carries air to the lungs
What are the bronchiole
The bronchiole is a very narrow tube that carries air to the alveoli
What takes place in the lungs
Gaseous exchange
What are the alveolus
Tine air sacs for gaseous exchange
What is the pleura
A membrane that helps lungs to move easily
What are the intercostal muscles
They move the chest during breathing
What is the diaphram
A muscle that controls the volume of the chest
What happens when you inhale
- The rives move up and out
- The diaphram moves down
- The volume of the rib cage increases
- Air is sucked in
What happens when you exhale
1, the intercostal muscles relax
2. The rib cage moves down and in
3. The volume of the ribcage decreases
4. Air is forced out
What is diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from where it is in high concentration to where it is in lower concentration.
Describe the interaction between the respiratory system and circulatory system
- The heart pumps deoxygenated blood throughout the pulmonary artery to the lungs.
- The artery divides up into the capillaries that surround the alveoli of the lungs.
- Gaseous exchange happens between the respiratory system and the circulatory system.
- The capillaries that surround the alveoli in the lungs join up to form the pulmonary vein.
- This vein carries the oxygenated blood back to the heart.
