The Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the main parts of the Circulatory System?
The Heart, Blood & Blood Vessels
Why is it known as a double Circulatory System?
Because blood needs to go around the body 2 times to make a full circulation.
Why is the Unidirectional flow of blood important?
Because most of the blood vessels have to go against gravity.
What does the left side of your heart do?
It pumps Oxygenated blood around the body.
What does the right side of your heart do?
It pumps Deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What side of the heart has a thicker muscular wall?
Left side
Why does one side have a thicker muscular wall?
Because it needs to pump blood all around the body.
What are the 3 types of blood Vessels?
Arteries, Veins & Capillaries.
What is the structure of the arteries?
Thick walls, smaller lumen & No Valves.
What is the structure of the veins?
Thin walls, Large lumen & has valves.
What is the structure of the capillaries?
The wall is 1 cell thick, no valves & it links the arteries and veins together.
Why are valves important?
They ensure that there is no back flow of blood.
What are the 4 main things in blood vessels?
Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cell (WBC), platelets & plasma
What do red blood cells do?
They transport oxygen around the body and carbon to the lungs.
What do white blood cells do?
They fight of germs and diseases.
