Q

Explain how muscles contract

A

Muscles contract when a nerve impulse stimulates several muscle cells. Then the Actin and the Myosin combine causing muscle to shorten (contract).

Actin and myosin disengage when relaxing

Q

In a electrocardiogram..
P = ..
QRS = ..
T = ..

A
P = contraction of the Atria
QRS = contraction of ventricles
T = recovery of ventricles (Recovery of ventricle occurs at the same time as the recovery of the atria, therefore the recovery of atria cannot be detected)

Q

What is the mechanisms which signals the heart to beat?..

A

The sinoatrial node generates an electrical stimulus which causes atria to contract. During the contraction of the atria, it sends a message to the atrioventricular node (AV node) which then sends a signal to the bundle of his. It then sends a message to the purkinjie fibres which leads the contraction of the ventricles.
