Concentrated resource consumption
A place, or location where there is a high amount of resources consumed in a small location e.g. A megacity.
Carbon footprint
A measurement of all the greenhouse gases we individually produce through burning fossil fuels.
Consumption
The using up of something.
Counter-urbanisation
The movement of people, and employment from major cities to smaller settlements just beyond the city.
Eco-footprint
A measure of how much land is needed to provide a place with all the energy, water, and materials it needs.
Informal economy
Forms of emoluments that are not officially recognised e.g. Street hawkers.
Landfill
Disposal of rubbish by burying it, and covering it with soil.
Megacities
A many centred, multi-city urban area of more than 10 million people.
Natural increase
The birth rate minus the death rate for a place. Normally given as a % of the total population.
Pollution
The presence of chemicals, noise, dirt, or other substances that have harmful effects on the environment.
Quality of life
The degree of well-being felt by an individual, or group of people. Can be related to jobs, food, services etc.
Re-urbanisation
When people who used to live in the city, but moved to rural areas return to the city to live.
Self-help schemes
Where the local government supplies residents with the means to improve their lives e.g. Building materials.
Squatter settlements
Informal settlements built on the edge of cities without permission e.g. Rochina in Rio de Janeiro
Sustainable transport
Interconnected public transport systems to reduce congestion.
