The Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
What is the cerebral cortex otherwise known as?
The cerebrum ( no longer used, now called cerebral cortex for higher )
What is the cerebral cortex?
The centre of conscious thought
What can the cerebral cortex do?
The cerebral cortex is the centre of conscious thought and can recall memories and alter behaviour in the light of experiences.
What is localisation in the cerebral cortex?
There is localisation of brain functions in the cerebral cortex, which has many distinct regions, containing sensory areas, motors areas, and association areas
What are association areas?
Association areas are involved in language processing, personality, imagination and intelligence
List 4 functions of the association areas
Language processing, personality, imagination and intelligence
What is the function of the sensory areas in the cerebral cortex?
The sensory areas receive information as sensory impulses from receptors
What do the motor areas on the cerebral cortex do?
The motor areas act on information from association areas by sending motor impulses to effectors
What side of the cerebral cortex processes information from the right side of the body?
The left cerebral cortex
What hemisphere of the cerebral cortex processes information from the left side of the body?
The right cerebral hemisphere
What transfers information between cerebral hemispheres?
The corpus callosum.
Information from one side of the body is processed by the opposite side of the cerebrum
Just a fact to memorise!!
