Q

What are the functions of the endomembrane system components?

A

1. Nucleus
a. stores genetic material
b. contains linear chromatin (relaxed chromosomes)
c. nucleolus region assembles ribosome subunits
d. surrounded by a double-membrane or nuclear envelope having nuclear pores
2. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER – long)
a. Lipid synthesis and detoxification
3. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER – tiny)
a. membranes are network of channels
b. involved in synthesis and assembly of proteins
c. package proteins into vesicles to ship them
4. Transport vesicles (between Golgi apparatus and SER)
a. Sacs bud off of RER and move to Golgi body where they fuse, spilling contents into the Golgi body
5. Golgi apparatus (lonely long hihi)
a. flattened stacks of membrane
b. modify, package and distribute material to different parts of the cell
6. Secretory vesicle (between Golgi apparatus and pm)
a. sacs bud off of Golgi body and move to the pm where they fuse, spilling contents into intercellular space
