The cell cycle Flashcards
What phases are involved in mitosis?
Interphase
Mitotic Phase
What can the mitotic phase be broken down into?
Mitosis itself and cytokinesis
How many major steps are involved in mitosis and what are they?
4 major steps Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
What does interphase involve?
The growth of the cell and DNA synthesis
How many stages are involved in interphase and what are they?
Three stages
G1
S
G2
What stage in interphase is the growth phase?
G1
What stage in interphase is where DNA is replicated?
S
What stage in interphase is the further growth phase?
G2
What does the prophase involve?
This is where DNA condenses into chromosome, each consisting of two sister chromatids
How does the prophase work?
The nuclear membrane breaks down and spindle fibers being to extend from the centrosome form a point call the kinetochore
What does the Metaphase involve?
Chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate
What is the metaphase plate?
The equator of the cell
What does the anaphase involve?
As the spindle microtubules shorted by depolymerisation, sister chromatids are separated and the chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles
What does the telophase involve?
The chromosomes decondense and nuclear membranes form around them at either side of the cell
What does cytokinesis involve?
This is where the cytoplasm is separated and creates two daughter cells
