The Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Order of the stages
A

2
Q
What is the longest stage in the cell cycle?
A
Interphase
3
Q
What is the cell theory?
A
- All living things are made of cells
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
- The basic unit of life is the cell
4
Q
What happens in Interphase?
A
- Period of growth and preparation (cell increases in size)
- Makes proteins
- some organelle replicate
- DNA and centrioles is copied (copied for the new cell)
- makes new material for daughter cell, mitochondria, and chloroplast is produced here
- Chromatin is uncoiled and “relaxed”
5
Q
What happens in Prophase early?
A
- replicated DNA coils into x-shaped chromosomes
- nucleolus disappears
- nuclear membrane breaks down
- spindle fibres appear and attach to centromere
- centrioles in cell move apart
6
Q
What happens in prophase late?
A
- Spindles complete forming and attach to centromeres
- Centrioles move to opposite poles of cell
7
Q
What happens in metaphase?
A
-Spindle fibres pull chromosomes to the middle/equator of the cell
8
Q
What happens in anaphase?
A
- spindle fibres contract
- separate sister chromatids pulling DNA to opposite poles
9
Q
What happens in telophase?
A
- spindle fibres disappear
- nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappears
- cell is ready to divide
- nucleolus forms around the chromosomes at the opposite ends of the dividing cell.
10
Q
What happens in cytokinesis?
A
- cell division
- results in 2 new cells
11
Q
What happens in mitosis?
A
The nucleus of the cell divided into 2 equal and identical parts. Each part has a copy of the DNA
