Caner Flashcards
What is cancer?
It is a class of diseases characterized by or if control cell growth. If harms the body when altered cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps called Tumors.
Alcohol
Increases risk of breast, colon, liver cancer. Etc.
It prevents cells from repairing.
Food
Microwave popcorn, GMO foods, red meat etc. Raises risk
Foods cause obesity, which then causes cancer
Chemicals in products
It can cause stomach, liver cancer. Etc.
Home
Air fresheners, pesticides, trisclosan, all raises risk
Sometimes contains harmful chemicals
Mouth cancer
Radiation
Too much exposure to radiation raises risk
Certain wavelengths (X-rays, gamma rays) damages DNA and cells
Breast, oroslate cancer, melanomia
Sunlight
UV radiation damages the genetic material, if too much is damaged it causes too much build up and can grow too much cells
People use sunscreen to control it
Skin cancer
Tabacco
Leading cause of cancer and death from cancer
Many harmful chemicals, at least 60 cause cancer.
Affects lung tissue
Kills cells in you, 30% of cancer caused by tabacco
Work
Working night shifts raises risk
Breast cancer in female nurses
Too much light exposure at night or day causes cancer
Ruins bodies circadian rhythm
Construction workers could get skin cancer from being exposed to too much sunlight
Labs, firefighters are exposed to chemicals. (Smoke as well)
Stress causes cancer
Can cancer cells divide indefinitely?
Yes
An alteration in a gene is called
Mutation
What causes mutations?
Radiation from sun, tabacco
If both rumour suppressor genes get mutated what happens?
It will continue to multiply
The movement of tumour cells to other parts of the body is called
Metastasis
One way cancer cells die during metastasis
Dies from being damaged in a blood vessel
The Suizide OF a cell is called
Apoptosis
