The cell cycle Flashcards
1
Q
The purpose of cell division is for..
A
- growth
- maintenance
- repair
2
Q
What is chromatin?
A
- uncoiled DNA
- almost always this form
- needs to be uncoiled to be “read” for cellular functions
3
Q
What are chromosomes?
A
- coiled DNA
- in this form during cell division only
- makes division easier (not tangled)
4
Q
What are the steps of the cell cycle?
A
Interphase
- G1, S, G2
Mitosis
- PMAT (Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase)
Cytokinesis
5
Q
What is a centromere?
A
- where the DNA is divided (middle)
6
Q
Interphase
A
- majority of cells time
- basic cellular functions take place (like growth)
- makes copy of organelles and DNA during this
- DNA in chromatin form
7
Q
Prophase
A
- DNA shortens and thickens to create chromosomes
- nuclear membrane disappears
- centrioles form and move to poles
8
Q
Metaphase
A
- spindle fibres attach to chromosomes
- fingers pull chromosomes to align with equator
9
Q
Anaphase
A
- spindle fingers pull DNA to both poles (half and half split)
10
Q
Telophase
A
- chromosomes reach poles
- nuclear membranes start reforming
11
Q
Cytokinesis
A
- separation of both cells fully
Animal - pinches inward to create furrow
- continues until full separation
plant - forms cell plate in middle of cell
12
Q
What is G1 phase?
A
Growth 1
- makes new proteins and organelles
13
Q
What are the stages of interphase?
A
G1, S, G2
14
Q
What is S phase?
A
DNA Replication
- Makes extra DNA copy
15
Q
What is the G2 phase?
A
Growth 2
- cells grow further and prepare for mitosis
