Cancer and stem cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is apoptosis?
A
- death of useless cells
- usually happens when a cell replicates 50-60 times
- also happens in damaged cells
2
Q
What is cancer?
A
- uncontrolled growth and division of cells
- cells form a mass called a tumour
3
Q
What’s a tumour?
A
- some cells ignore the signal to stop growing/dividing because of a mutation
4
Q
What causes cell mutations?
A
- inherited (genetics)
- random
- environment (UV and radiation)
- chemicals (cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, etc)
- some viruses (HPV)
5
Q
What are the two categories of tumours?
A
- Benign (non cancerous)
- malignant (cancerous)
6
Q
Benign tumours are..
A
- relatively harmless (depends on location)
- mitosis occurs at moderate rate
- don’t invade other cells or spread (localized)
7
Q
Malignant tumours are..
A
- dangerous
- rapid cell division
- can spread to other parts of the body
8
Q
What is the lymphatic system?
A
- helps the immune system
- but cancer can spread this way (through lymph nodes)
9
Q
What are the treatments for cancer?
A
- radiation
- surgery
- chemotherapy
10
Q
Totipotent stem cells are..
A
- have ability to become any type of cell in body
- toti = total
- potent = potential
11
Q
Pluripotent stem cells are..
A
- can become almost any type of cell (e.g., early embryo cells)
12
Q
Multipotent cells are..
A
- can only become a few types of cells (e.g., blood stem cells)
13
Q
Embryonic stem (ES) cells are..
A
- found in early embryos (1-2 weeks)
- pluripotent
- used to treat illnesses and conditions
14
Q
Adult stem cells are..
A
- specialized cells (tissue-specific)
- can restore bone marrow in patients that have received chemo
