The Cell Flashcards

Organelle
A structure that performs important functions within an eukaryotic cell. For example the mitochandria.
Cell membrane
Thin flexible barrier around a cell, regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Like the balloon skin with vanilla inside.
Cell wall
Supporting layer around the cell membrane in plants algae and some bacteria. The snap you here when you break celery is the cell wall breaking.
Chlorophyll
Principal pigment of plants and other photosynthetic organisms; captures light energy
Cytoplasm
Material inside the cell membrane not including the nucleus.
Mitochondria
Cell organelle that converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use. Mito lighto
Nucleus
Structure that contains the cells genetic material (DNA) and controls the cells activities. In the center if the cell.
Antigen
Protein marker on cell membrane. The “ID tag”on a cell.
Diffusion
Process by which molecules tend to move from a area of high concentration to an area where they are less concentrated. The vanilla diffused out of the balloon in the balloon lab.
Osmosis
Diffusion of water through Selectively permeable membrane.
Cellular respiration
Energy releasing process. O2+glucose to co2+water+ATP
Photosynthesis
Biochemical food making process.
Chloroplast
Organelle found in cells in plants that takes sunlight and turns it into chemical energy. Looks like stacks of pancakes.
