Define
Morroccoan crisis
The Moroccan Crises were two international crises in the early 20th century that involved disputes over control of Morocco
Define
Frist morrocoan crisis
Context: France had made a secret agreement with Spain to partition Morocco.
Incident: On March 31, 1905, German Emperor Wilhelm II visited Tangier and declared support for Moroccan independence, challenging French influence.
Resolution: The crisis was resolved at the Algeciras Conference in 1906, where France was allowed to maintain control but had to recognize other nations’ economic interests in Morocco.
Define
Second Morrocoan crisis
Context: Tensions remained high, and in July 1911, Germany sent a gunboat, the Panther, to Agadir, ostensibly to protect German interests during a local uprising.
Resolution: The crisis ended with the Treaty of Fez in November 1911, where France was granted a protectorate over Morocco, and Germany received territories in the French Congo as compensation.

Nationalism: The rise of nationalism was a major factor. Various ethnic groups in the Balkans sought independence and self-determination, leading to tensions and conflicts2. This was particularly evident with the decline of the Ottoman Empire, which controlled much of the region.
Bosnian Crisis (1908): Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina, previously under Ottoman control, which angered Serbia and Russia and heightened tensions in the region.
Balkan Wars (1912-1913): The First Balkan War saw the Balkan League (Serbia, Greece, Montenegro, and Bulgaria) fighting against the Ottoman Empire to gain territory. The Second Balkan War followed shortly after, with Bulgaria fighting against its former allies over territorial disputes1.
Great Power Rivalries: The region was a focal point for the rivalries between major European powers, particularly Austria-Hungary and Russia. Austria-Hungary sought to expand its influence, while Russia supported Slavic nations and sought access to the Mediterranean through the straits of Constantinople.
Decline of the Ottoman Empire: The weakening of the Ottoman Empire, often referred to as the “sick man of Europe,” created a power vacuum that various Balkan states and European powers sought to fill.
