What is an LEDC?
A less economically developed country
Name four causes of world poverty.
Any four of the below:
- Natural disasters
- Lack of education
- Diseases
- Unfair trade
- Wars
- Corrupt governments
What is the significance of natural disasters on LEDCs?
Tsunamis and earthquakes make it difficult for countries to maintain a stable economy when they have to rebuild.
Farmland and homes destroyed leaves people without food and anywhere to live.
What is the significance of lack of education on LEDCs?
People remain uneducated and cannot get good jobs to provide for their families.
They live in poverty with little money and skills.
What is the significance of disease on LEDCs?
When HIV and AIDS are prevelant they kill a growing number of people.
The loss of parents (earners) leaves children orphaned and living in poverty.
What is the significance of unfair trade on LEDCs?
World trade is controlled by the richer countries who decide the price paid from LEDCs.
They take advantage and use cheap labour or low prices for goods.
What is the significance of war on LEDCs?
LEDCs that are badly affected by war cannot keep up economically with the destruction and people end up living in poverty because the money is going to fighting the war.
What is the significance of corrupt governments in LEDCs?
Some governments are corrupt and do not value equality.
Groups are isolated and this limits their progress economically and causes poverty.
