German troops were meant to pass through Belgium and deafeat France within 6 weeks
Then they would try to defeat Russia

- the be,glum army fought bravely and slowed down Germany
- the Russian troops fought quicker then Germany expected
- the British force helped the french to slow down Germany and stopped them to advance
- neither side was able to make further progress and had reached a stalemate
