This was a big problem because so many men were crowded together in the trenches and couldn’t easily keep clean. Everyone had lice and the rotting bodies attracted rats. One of the most common conditions was trench foot, which was caused by standing for long periods in mud and water. The feet would swell and go completely numb, before becoming very painful and starting to rot. Sometimes soldiers had to have their feet amputated.
